Minecraft 1.8
The changes in Minecraft 1.8 are pretty substantial and has been named the Bountiful Update. The update was released on September 2, 2014. This version has many new features added for mapmakers and features added for the survival game mode.
Some of the new mapmaking features include five new gamerules, five new statistics, twelve new commands, thirteen new NBT tags, and select "@e" for targeting entities. Some of the mapmaking changes include interaction with blocks in Adventure Mode are now disabled by default, a lot of new arguments and scopes for existing commands, the in-game block models are now customizable by resource packs, signs and books are now able to use JSON-formatted text, and monster spawners can be changed in a quicker fashion using spawn eggs.
Some of the new survival features many additions in 1.8, such as 36 new blocks to find and create, new underwater dungeon content, new mobs, sheep now drop mutton, armor stands, a few new achievements, spectator gamemode and "customized" and "debug mode" world types, additional "jacket" layer for player skins, and additional default skin "Alex" with smaller arms. There have been a lot of changes to the survival gamemode, such as rebalances to the enchanting and repairing systems, beacons are able to be colored with stained glass, a few more craftable and smeltable blocks, item frames now emit a redstone signal and can rotate in eight directions, the powered activator rail now dismounts those riding minecarts, arrows now decelerate much more quickly underwater and extinguish if on fire, and many improvements to the in-game mob AI and behavior. Villagers now harvest crops, breed only when willing, have more professions and trading schemes, and turn to witches when they are struck by lightning.
There were a few performance changes in version 1.8. These include a VBO (Vertex Buffer Object) toggle in the Video Settings menu, anisotropic filtering has been removed, advanced OpenGL removed in favor of the new Advanced Cave Culling Algorithm, and the render distance slider has a maximum of 32 chunks when using 64-bit Java allocated with 2GB of RAM.
