Tower Defense games have generally fallen out of favor in the mainline gaming industry in the 21st century. There are very few tower defense games in the AAA market, and even if they're there, it's usually as part of a gimmick or a minigame. Thus, Flash games have had time to refine and innovate on the formula by themselves. The Kingdom Rush series is probably the best example of this innovation. Let's look at Kingdom Rush Frontiers.

To play Kingdom Rush Frontiers, simply run the game with whatever SWF player you have.

The basic gameplay is still the same. You still have four tower types, each of which upgrades into two different versions that serve different purposes. You still have to place them around the map strategically to hold the enemy off. There are some new features in here now too, though. For instance, you have a hero unit that has persistent levels. This hero is incredibly powerful, and there are a ton of heroes to choose from. Each has their own unique skills and roles to fulfill.

There are also new powerups that will help you through the game, and these get more and more vital to your success as you continue playing the game. This also has a ton of challenges for extra stars for completionists too.

If you're a fan of tower defense games, this series is one of the best, and Kingdom Rush Frontiers is no exception.
